Before I left government, we had the capacity to pick up anybody in Nigeria once identified—Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for urgent action against Nigeria’s worsening security situation, emphasizing that saving lives must take precedence over religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation. Speaking at the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, he stressed that modern, technology-driven solutions are essential to tackling criminal activities across the country.

Obasanjo highlighted that with proper surveillance tools and intelligence systems, security agencies should be able to track and apprehend any criminal once identified. “Before I left government, we had the capacity to pick up anybody in Nigeria once identified… Every Nigerian life matters, whether Christian, Muslim, or pagan. Nigerians are being killed; this must stop,” he said. He added that if internal mechanisms fail, Nigerians have every right to seek international support to protect lives.

The former president described the loss of Nigerian lives as a national tragedy, urging immediate reforms and more effective policing strategies to curb the crisis. He underlined that in an era defined by advanced technology, no offender should be able to operate freely.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who also addressed the festival, affirmed the resilience and unity of the state despite persistent challenges. He prayed for divine guidance for leaders and reassured attendees that efforts to destabilize the country would ultimately fail. The annual carol festival, according to Mutfwang, serves as a platform to unite citizens from different denominations in worship and gratitude, reinforcing the message that collective strength can overcome adversity.

High-profile guests at the event included former President Obasanjo, retired General Lawrence Onoja, former Plateau governors Joshua Dariye and Jonah Jang, former Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen, former Adamawa State governor Boni Haruna, and former Chief of Defence Staff General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.), among others. Performances by gospel artists Buchi, Uche Etiaba, and Pastor Chingtok, as well as choirs from various denominations, rounded off the celebration.
