Journalist Sumner Sambo has described Nigeria’s political climate as “a theatre of absurdity,” criticizing political leaders for making bold declarations they never intend to follow through on. He made the remark during his appearance on Arise News on Monday, December 1, 2025, while reacting to a controversial comment by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Governor Okpebholo had vowed to resign if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to win Edo State in the 2027 presidential election — a statement Sambo believes reflects misplaced priorities.
According to Sambo, governors should be more concerned about delivering on their campaign promises than tying their political survival to federal election outcomes. He argued that such dramatic pledges only distract from governance.
To emphasize his point, Sambo cited a well-known example from the 2023 election season:
“Don’t forget Chief Bode George said that if President Tinubu wins the election, he would go on exile. Today, Bode George is still in Nigeria and still in the PDP.”
He explained that Nigerian politics is filled with such exaggerated statements that are rarely honored, adding that leaders must shift away from theatrics and focus on meaningful service to the people.
Sambo concluded by urging political leaders to prioritize governance over attention-grabbing declarations that fade once elections are over.
