Sheikh Imran AbdulMajeed Eleha, Chief Imam of the DaaruNaim Central Mosque in Lagos, has shed light on the origins of Boko Haram, clarifying that their extremist ideology does not reflect Islamic teachings.
Speaking with Ismaeel Uthman, Eleha explained that Boko Haram’s claims against Western education and their attacks on schoolchildren contradict the principles of Islam. He described the group’s beliefs as harsh and misleading.
“The Boko Haram sect has a very hard ideology that contradicts what Islam represents and teaches,” Eleha said. He traced the group’s beginnings to the 1980s, noting that early members were primarily rural farmers and fishermen living far from towns. “Originally, they were farmers and fishermen living deep inside the bush, far away from towns,” he added.
Eleha explained that these individuals were influenced by misguided clerics who promoted isolation and extremist interpretations. “They believed that no genuine Muslim should live in the town because of their ideology,” he said, emphasizing that these ideas have no basis in Islam.
The Chief Imam stressed that Islam encourages the pursuit of beneficial knowledge and supports education. Boko Haram’s rejection of Western education and violent actions stem from false teachings, not Islamic doctrine.
