A heartbreaking incident at Arruda Camera Park Zoo in João Pessoa, Brazil, has raised concerns over zoo security and mental health support after a young man lost his life inside a lion enclosure. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the event.
The victim, identified as Gerson, had faced a challenging upbringing marked by poverty and family mental-health struggles. Social worker Veronica Oliveira, who supported him for eight years, said he had long expressed a fascination with African wildlife, particularly lions, and struggled with emotional instability throughout his life.
According to Oliveira, Gerson previously attempted to reach Africa by entering a restricted airport zone, highlighting his strong desire to be close to wild animals. On the day of the tragedy, local officials reported that he climbed a high wall and entered the lion enclosure using a tree for support. Security personnel attempted to intervene, but he sustained fatal injuries before he could be rescued.
City administrators announced that the zoo will remain closed pending a full investigation. They expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures around wildlife. Zoo veterinarian Thiago Nery confirmed that the lioness involved was returned safely to her pen and appeared distressed but eventually calmed down.
Officials and wildlife advocates have reiterated that wild animals are not domestic pets, and ignoring safety guidelines endangers both humans and animals.
