Chelsea FC could reportedly scale back plans to sign highly rated Said El Mala if the club fails to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. The 19 year old winger has emerged as one of the standout young talents in German football after an impressive breakthrough campaign with 1. FC Köln.
El Mala has scored 12 goals and provided four assists during his first season in the Bundesliga after previously playing in Germany’s third tier with Viktoria Köln. His rapid development also earned him his first senior international call up for Germany national football team during World Cup qualifiers last year.
Several clubs across Europe are monitoring the teenager’s situation, with Brighton & Hove Albion FC considered one of the strongest contenders for his signature. Brighton’s interest reportedly dates back to last summer.
Recent reports in Germany suggest uncertainty over El Mala’s future increased after he and his brother Malek ended their relationship with previous representatives, with the player now being managed by his parents, Sabrina and Mohammed El Mala.
According to reports, Brighton recently paused negotiations after Köln reportedly demanded around €50 million for the winger. The Premier League side had allegedly considered an offer closer to €35 million.
German outlet Sport Bild reported that El Mala’s mother contacted Brighton directly after rumours emerged suggesting the club had withdrawn interest following Köln’s defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Brighton are said to have reassured the family that they still remained interested despite the current pause in talks. Fulham and Brentford are also believed to be monitoring developments closely.
Chelsea have reportedly explored the possibility of outbidding Brighton before potentially loaning the player back to Köln for another season. However, reports claim the London club’s financial plans may depend heavily on whether they secure Champions League football.
The report stated that Chelsea, currently outside the Premier League’s top positions, are unlikely to commit to major transfer spending without the financial boost that Champions League qualification would provide. Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler recently acknowledged the growing interest in El Mala but stressed the club remained focused on his long term development.
“What matters to us is that Said has made very positive progress in a short time and has contributed significantly to our season so far with his performances,” Kessler said. “He brings quality to the pitch week after week and has earned this attention through hard work.” Kessler added that Köln intended to continue supporting the youngster carefully as his career develops.
“We deliberately tied Said to the club on a long term basis before the season because we are convinced of his development and have a clear plan for him,” he said. El Mala remains under contract with Köln until 2030.
