The political camp of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has urged the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court to disregard a letter written by Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, who identified himself as the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The appeal follows rising tension within the party over legal battles and internal leadership disputes.
Arapaja’s letter reportedly advised the Chief Judge not to assign PDP-related cases to three specific judges — Justice James Omotosho, Justice Peter Odo Lifu, and Justice Abdulmalik — claiming their courts were “of particular concern” for matters affecting PDP interests. His request comes amid an ongoing tussle between the Tanimu Turaki-led faction, backed by PDP governors, and the Wike-backed faction vying for control of the party.
In a counter letter signed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Wike camp described Arapaja’s action as a direct attack on the judiciary. They argued that no individual or group has the authority to dictate how judges perform their duties or to influence case allocation for political gain. The faction insisted that the real issues within the PDP revolve around adherence to the party constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Nigerian Constitution.
The Wike bloc further dismissed Arapaja’s allegations as baseless and questioned his legitimacy, noting that his status as national secretary does not align with information available on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal. They urged the Chief Judge to ignore what they described as a “frivolous and inconsequential” plea.
According to the Wike camp, “Disregard a plea by the national secretary of PDP, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, asking for cases involving the party not to be assigned to certain judges in the FCT.”
