Edo:This Is A Villager Threatening Me That I Can’t Come To Benin, When I Come, He’ll Show Me–Obaseki

Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has responded firmly to comments from Governor Monday Okpebholo, insisting that no one can prevent him from entering Benin City. The disagreement follows Okpebholo’s claim that Obaseki has lost the support of the people and is no longer welcome in the state.

Reports from Nigerian Tribune on Monday, December 1, 2025, highlighted Okpebholo’s remarks, including his assertion that Edo residents, particularly younger citizens, would reject Obaseki if he returned. Okpebholo linked his statements to the 2027 elections, stating that Edo strongly supports President Bola Tinubu and even suggesting he would step down if the President failed to win re-election.

Obaseki described the public attacks as unnecessary hostility, noting that he has deliberately avoided interfering with the current administration to allow Okpebholo space to govern. He expressed surprise at the personal nature of the criticisms and recalled an earlier incident in Manchester, where he alleged that supporters of the governor attempted to confront him.

Highlighting his deep connection to Edo State, Obaseki affirmed that being from the region gives him every right to visit freely. He dismissed the threats as insulting and made it clear that he would return to Benin City confidently and without hesitation. “This is a villager threatening me that I cannot come to Benin, and that when I come, he will show me. Me! When I am ready to go, we will all come. This is an insult,” he said.
