Retired General Lucky Irabor, former Chief of Defence Staff, has voiced concerns over the establishment of new security agencies, including forest guards, arguing that such measures do not address the underlying challenges within Nigeria’s existing security forces. His comments were made during an interview with Channels Television on Monday.
Irabor emphasized that the Nigerian Police Force faces serious capability gaps and structural problems that require thorough assessment and reform. “The Nigerian Police Force has serious policing issues, serious problems, and capability gaps. Instead of addressing what those gaps are…you think that creating other agencies to fill the vacuum is a wrong approach,” he stated, highlighting the risks of creating parallel security structures without fixing existing weaknesses.
Regarding the recent law establishing forest guards, Irabor described it as a mistake. He warned that the same systemic issues affecting the police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps could similarly undermine the effectiveness of forest guards. “Even though the law has been passed for forest guards, I as an individual think that is a mistake we have made. The disease that has killed the police…is also going to kill that establishment,” he explained.
Irabor stressed that careful analysis and structural reform are essential to ensure new security initiatives do not fail, cautioning that ignoring these issues could also negatively impact the military.
