From Sokoto Street, I Discovered That Even Hausas Who Are Rational Enough Support Kanu- Egbuonu

In a recent interview on AIT, Right Reverend Ikechukwu Egbuonu, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River, disclosed that sympathy for Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu extends beyond his traditional supporters in the South-East, reaching ordinary Hausa and Fulani residents in Sokoto. The revelation came following his visit to the Sokoto Maximum Correctional Centre, where Kanu is serving a life sentence.

Bishop Egbuonu noted that the support reflects growing national discontent with Nigeria’s economic, social, and security challenges. “From Sokoto street, I discovered that even Hausas… Fulanis, some of them good ones among them who are rational enough, are in support of Kanu,” he told reporters. While he clarified that he does not endorse all of Kanu’s methods, the Bishop emphasized that the core reasons behind the agitation resonate with a significant portion of the population.

Kanu’s transfer to Sokoto prison followed a life imprisonment verdict delivered by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho at a Federal High Court, concluding a ten-year legal process. During his conversation with Kanu, Egbuonu observed that the IPOB leader remains calm but concerned about the broader challenges affecting Nigerians.

Highlighting the underlying grievances fueling support for the secessionist leader, the Bishop urged the Federal Government to adopt dialogue rather than a hardline approach. He warned that ignoring deep-seated discontent across the country, particularly in the South-East, could exacerbate tensions and national instability.
