Fubara Counters Amaewhule Over Alleged Neglected Public Schools

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has responded to criticism from Speaker Martin Amaewhule regarding the condition of public schools, highlighting ongoing tensions between the state executive and assembly.

The dispute began when Amaewhule addressed lawmakers, condemning what he described as neglected schools with crumbling structures, overgrown premises, and insufficient resources. “We cannot continue to be quiet. We cannot continue to fold our hands while our children continue to suffer, while teachers continue to cry,” he stated on November 27, 2025. He questioned why over N600 billion reportedly left by former administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas has not been utilized to improve educational infrastructure.

In response, Governor Fubara acknowledged the challenges but attributed them to the legacy of previous administrations. Speaking at the 123/124 combined quarterly meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in Port Harcourt on December 1, he said, “The deterioration of these schools did not happen overnight. You are aware of the poor state of our schools. They never got to that state in one month or one year; it has been an issue.” Fubara also outlined plans to prioritize education in the 2026 budget, including teacher recruitment and infrastructure upgrades.

The exchange has raised concerns among residents and educators about the politicization of critical issues affecting children’s learning. One Port Harcourt teacher, speaking anonymously, said, “Our kids deserve better than this back-and-forth.”
