From political intrigue to the viral mystery of “Labubu,” Nigerians spent 2025 searching for clarity, entertainment and connection in a year shaped by rapid change and emotional milestones. Google’s newly released Year in Search report offers a revealing look at the country’s digital heartbeat, capturing what moved, shocked and inspired Nigerians over the past 12 months.

In a year marked by headline-grabbing developments, politics dominated Google searches in Nigeria. Senator Natasha Akpoti emerged as the year’s most-searched Nigerian personality, revealing how heavily political narratives shaped public attention in 2025.
Searches also spiked around major international events. The Israel–Iran War and the U.S. elections ranked high, reflecting Nigerians’ growing engagement with geopolitics and shifting power dynamics around the world.
The nation also leaned on Google Search to process collective grief. The deaths of former President Muhammadu Buhari and legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai triggered nationwide reflection, prompting Nigerians to revisit their histories, achievements and legacies. The passing of Pope Francis generated similar waves of global and local interest.
Music searches revealed a dual appetite for spiritual grounding and Afrobeats energy. The gospel hit “Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)” by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills was Nigeria’s most-searched song, while viral newcomer Fido’s “Joy Is Coming” secured enormous traction online. Davido and Omah Lay’s hit “With You” remained a national obsession.

The year also saw Nollywood and Nigerian TV continue to dominate cultural conversations. Director Kemi Adetiba ranked among the most searched personalities, powered by the success of her breakout series “To Kill a Monkey,” which became Nigeria’s most searched local show of 2025.
Decoding the Culture: From ‘Labubu’ to ‘Achalugo’
If one trend defined Nigeria’s internet humor and confusion this year, it was the wave of people asking: “What is Labubu?” The quirky, gremlin-like toy and social media mascot became the country’s most-searched question, symbolizing the chaotic charm of Nigerian online culture.
Likewise, the meaning of “Achalugo”popularized by the YouTube film ”Love in Every Word” led search queries as young Nigerians turned to Google to interpret viral slang and cultural expressions.
Nigerian kitchens also took a global turn in 2025. Trending recipes ranged from the familiar Chinchin and Sausage Roll to globally influenced favorites like Pornstar Martini, Ginger Shots, Hummus, and Soufflé Pancakes. Searches suggest that Nigerian home cooks are experimenting more than ever, merging traditional flavors with international trends.
“This year’s data is a vivid, unfiltered reflection of what Nigeria cared about in 2025,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa. “From decoding viral slang to tracking major political headlines, Nigerians are using Search to stay informed, inspired and connected.”
The Year in Search report paints a picture of a country deeply curious about its leaders, fiercely engaged with its entertainment ecosystem, and quick to embrace new cultural expressions. Whether mourning national icons, celebrating artistic breakthroughs or simply figuring out what a viral toy means, Nigerians once again turned to Google as their guide through a fast-moving year.
