NNPP chieftain Buba Galadima has defended Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, describing him as a patriotic Nigerian whose opinions, even if controversial, contribute meaningfully to national discourse. His comments were made during an interview on AIT Live News, amid criticism directed at Gumi over his public statements on security matters.
Galadima stressed that while many Nigerians may disagree with Gumi’s approaches or perspectives, it is dangerous to demonize voices that challenge government narratives. “Gumi is a patriotic Nigerian who has a view. It may not resonate with me or you, but he remains a Nigerian with an alternative view to that of government,” he said, highlighting the importance of diverse viewpoints in a thriving democracy.
He noted that Gumi’s interventions, including his outreach to bandit groups, should be viewed as attempts to seek solutions to persistent security challenges in the country. While some positions may spark debate, Galadima argued that such discussion is essential and should not be misinterpreted as disloyalty.
The NNPP leader further warned that attacking or vilifying individuals who raise difficult questions discourages civic engagement. He emphasized that addressing Nigeria’s security issues requires openness to multiple perspectives, including those from religious leaders, community figures, and independent analysts.
