Gunmen Kill Monarch, Wife, Two Residents In Benue Community

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of the district head of Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area, Alexander Awodi, by suspected gunmen.

The police spokesperson, Edet Udeme, said the attack also claimed the life of the monarch’s wife, Abigail Awodi, along with two other individuals.

She explained that the police have launched a full investigation to track down those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.

According to reports, the attack was carried out by four armed men who arrived on two motorcycles.

They reportedly went straight to the residence of the traditional ruler and opened fire on him and members of his household.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers spoke the local language and even exchanged greetings with people around, which made it difficult for anyone to suspect danger at first.

The attackers were not suspected to be herders because they spoke our dialect and exchanged pleasantries with people around. No one suspected they were enemies.

“However, immediately they entered the traditional ruler’s residence, they opened fire, causing residents to flee for safety,” the source said.

The source said that the attackers stayed in the area for about 20 minutes before moving to another house nearby, where they killed two more people and injured one person before escaping.
