‘He Gave Deaf Ears To My Advice’ – Babachir Lawal Speaks On Absence At Atiku’s ADC Registration

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has clarified why he did not attend former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In an interview with Punch, Lawal said the event was initially scheduled for Sunday, prompting him to travel to Yola in preparation, but was later shifted to Monday without prior consultation.

Lawal described the sudden change as “moving the goal post in the middle of the game,” explaining that he had other engagements and could not adjust his personal schedule at short notice. He noted that he had warned Atiku that his absence might send the wrong message given their shared political alignment, but said the former vice president “gave deaf ears” to his advice and proceeded with the registration.

The former SGF emphasized that his absence should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from the political movement but rather as a consequence of poor planning and disregard for his counsel. Atiku’s registration in Jada, Adamawa, has attracted widespread attention, and Lawal’s comments shed light on internal tensions within the political space.
