Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has declared his readiness to spend Christmas behind bars if necessary, highlighting his ongoing fight against injustice in Nigeria. Speaking to SYMFONI TV after a court appearance, Sowore noted that he would not be alone, as many of his friends are currently detained in prisons across the country, including Sokoto, where he believes Nnamdi Kanu is being wrongfully held.
Sowore’s legal troubles stem from his activism and exposure of police misconduct. He explained that he was summoned by the police for recording officers on duty, an encounter that escalated into accusations that he challenged the authority of the Inspector-General of Police. Since January, he has been involved in ongoing legal battles, with his passport seized as part of the process.
The activist also criticized the state of Nigeria’s security institutions, arguing that both the military and police have strayed from their core responsibilities. “The military now handles traffic and serves food at ceremonies—tasks that are nowhere near their constitutional role,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to activism, citing successes such as the release of unlawfully detained citizens and influencing lawmakers to amend certain policing practices.
He urged Nigerians to remain united in resisting oppression, stating, “A united people cannot be defeated,” emphasizing the importance of collective action in defending citizens’ rights and holding those in power accountable.
