Dorcas Kagendo, a woman from Meru, has shared the heartbreaking story of her struggle with stage four liver cancer and how her family abandoned her when she needed them most. Dorcas returned to Kenya from Saudi Arabia after receiving the devastating diagnosis, only to find herself without support.
Raised by her grandmother after her mother remarried, Dorcas went on to complete her education and later married, bearing one child. However, her marriage was abusive, prompting her to leave and return to her grandmother’s care. Following a friend’s advice, she sought work in Saudi Arabia, leaving her daughter with her aunt while sending money home and saving the rest.
After two years abroad, Dorcas fell ill, noticing yellowing of her skin and other health changes. Her employer took her to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with stage four liver cancer. She began chemotherapy in Saudi Arabia but was later advised to continue treatment back in Kenya.
Upon her return, Dorcas revealed that her family refused to support her. She rented a house and started caring for her daughter alone. Despite having been financially stable when she returned, the costs of medical care and chemotherapy depleted her savings. She now struggles to afford food and proper nutrition, which has further weakened her for treatment.
Dorcas is appealing to fellow Kenyans for assistance to raise funds for a balanced diet, hoping to regain strength and resume chemotherapy. She described her current condition as extremely painful, with severe weight loss and ongoing stress.
