I can fly to Benin City, but I can’t move without police from Benin City to my constituency-Ihonvbere

Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, has called for clarity regarding the recent presidential directive withdrawing police orderlies from Very Important Persons (VIPs). In an interview with The PUNCH, Ihonvbere emphasized the need to define who is impacted by the policy, stressing the importance of security for public officials.

Although he does not consider himself a VIP, Ihonvbere explained that his role as a national officer requires protection while traveling. “In my own case, I can fly to Benin City, Edo State, but I can’t move without police from Benin City to my constituency. This is because that road is a danger zone where kidnappers hold sway,” he said.

He pointed out that in many countries, key government functionaries are routinely provided with security to ensure their safety, and he believes Nigeria should adopt clear guidelines distinguishing VIPs from public officers. Ihonvbere stressed that the directive should not inadvertently compromise the safety of officials performing their duties.

The lawmaker urged the government to provide a detailed explanation of the policy so affected individuals can understand their security arrangements. He emphasized that public officers often operate in high-risk areas and require protection for the effective execution of their responsibilities.
