Mrs. Oluwafunmilayo Samuel has recounted the heart-wrenching ordeal surrounding her husband’s disappearance after a boat accident on his way back from Cameroon, according to The Punch.
The incident occurred three weeks ago when Olajide Oredipe, a telecom worker and father of three, boarded a vessel for his return trip from official duties. The boat reportedly capsized mid-journey, leaving several passengers missing. Since then, Oredipe’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Speaking in an interview, Mrs. Samuel described the emotional anguish of expecting her husband’s birthday message, unaware that the tragedy had already occurred. She explained, “I did not know my husband had drowned while I was expecting his birthday wishes,” noting that his sudden unreachability initially seemed like a network problem until colleagues informed the family of the accident.
Rescue efforts by authorities have so far yielded limited results, leaving the families of missing passengers in prolonged distress. Mrs. Samuel said her children continue to ask when their father will return, a question she cannot answer, while appealing for intensified search operations from both Nigerian and Cameroonian agencies.
She also called on the government and maritime authorities to improve safety regulations for cross-border water travel, particularly for Nigerians who travel for work. Oredipe, known for his dedication to his job and close family ties, had been expected home shortly before the tragedy occurred.
