I didn’t know that God will disgrace me to show me that Jonathan was even a saint—Buba Galadima

According to the Daily Post, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Buba Galadima, revealed that the worsening security situation across Nigeria has compelled him to rethink the harsh assessments he once made about former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Galadima admitted that he previously ranked among Jonathan’s strongest opponents, constantly faulting his decisions and leadership style.

However, with the current state of insecurity, he now holds the view that Jonathan’s government handled national security more effectively than those who came after him.

His reassessment, he explained, stems from comparing the actions taken by Jonathan during critical moments with what he believes current leaders are doing or failing to do.

Reflecting on events leading up to the 2015 general elections, Galadima recalled how Jonathan chose to delay the polls for six weeks due to escalating threats and violence in several parts of the country.

According to him, Jonathan sought external assistance by hiring mercenaries, who he claimed worked swiftly to restore calm.

This intervention, Galadima noted, made it possible for elections to be conducted in all polling units across the federation, despite earlier fears that insecurity would disrupt voting.

He argued that if Nigeria were to face a similar challenge under the present administration, the outcome would be very different.

Rather than taking steps to secure the nation, Galadima alleged that the current government would allow insecurity to intensify.

He claimed this would enable manipulation of the electoral process by creating conditions that favour rigging or the imposition of predetermined results.

To him, Jonathan’s approach at the time showed a level of leadership anchored in empathy and respect for democratic norms.

He stressed that the former president knew postponing the election to ensure safety and fairness could ultimately cost him a second term in office, yet Jonathan still proceeded because he placed national interest above personal ambition.

Galadima recounted telling journalists he had once been one of Jonathan’s loudest and most persistent critics.

He added that witnessing recent developments forced him to view the former president through a different lens.

He said, “I didn’t know that God would disgrace me to show me that Jonathan was even a saint.”

He further described Jonathan as a more competent manager of national affairs than those who succeeded him.

Galadima emphasised that during Jonathan’s era, even though the country grappled with severe insecurity, the president took decisive actions such as the six-week suspension of the 2015 elections to restore order swiftly.

He explained that Jonathan, being academically accomplished and conscious of democratic values, understood that no incumbent is guaranteed re-election in a transparent process.

Yet he still chose to prioritise stability by postponing the polls, deploying external forces, and ensuring that not a single polling unit was left out during the eventual election.

Galadima concluded that Jonathan’s willingness to put the country ahead of personal political gain distinguished him from today’s leaders and demonstrated a level of integrity Nigeria desperately needs.
