Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that the recent events in Guinea-Bissau do not constitute a real coup, according to Daily Post on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Jonathan spoke after reports emerged of a military takeover during the country’s presidential election.
Jonathan, part of an African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and West African Elders Forum election observation team, described the situation as unusual. He noted that it was strange for a sitting president to announce a coup while still in apparent control of government operations.
On November 27, 2025, General Horta Inta-A Na Man was sworn in following the military’s announcement that it had taken full control, suspended elections, and closed the country’s borders. Despite this, Jonathan questioned the legitimacy of the claim, suggesting that former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, a former military officer, could not have been easily overthrown.
He explained that in a genuine coup, the military would prevent the sitting president from making public statements or managing the situation via phone. Jonathan described the situation as “disturbing” and said it caused him more personal pain than the day he called then-President Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him after losing the Nigerian election.
