Veteran Nollywood actress Jumoke George has opened up about a dark period in her life, revealing that severe depression and anxiety once brought her close to suicide. Speaking on the Talk-To-B Podcast, George recounted experiences of homelessness and emotional turmoil that left her in a life-threatening state.
George explained that unforeseen circumstances forced her to take shelter in a church, where she was provided a temporary home by the late founder. “One thing led to another, and I started living at the church… it’s not comfortable and conducive,” she said. To secure her stay, she gave away about 70% of her personal belongings.
The actress also described the mental toll of long periods without acting work. “I would be at home for two, three, four months. I won’t get work… then depression and anxiety set in. Then different types of sickness,” she recalled. These challenges eventually led her to attempt suicide, an event so intense that her child, Ife, fainted upon learning of it during the interview.
Medical professionals later confirmed that George was experiencing “high depression and high anxiety coexisting at the peak,” a dangerous combination where the likely outcomes were either suicide or severe mental illness. She credited speaking out and seeking help as critical to her survival.
By sharing her journey, Jumoke George highlights the hidden struggles many face with mental health and the importance of support, awareness, and speaking up during crises.
