Veteran Nigerian actor and filmmaker Antar Laniyan has called for an end to unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment in Nollywood, stressing that actors always have the choice to refuse inappropriate demands. He shared his views during an appearance on the Behind The Fame Podcast on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
When asked about unspoken rules in the industry that need to stop, Laniyan criticized recurring allegations of coercion tied to role acquisition. “You don’t have to sleep with anybody to get a role. Walk away. Of course, there are directors and producers who will offer you opportunities without expecting anything in return,” he stated, emphasizing that performers retain control over their choices.
Laniyan argued that many narratives around harassment lack verification, pointing out that actors should present evidence or defend themselves when making serious claims. He added that the industry offers multiple opportunities, and no actor should feel compelled to accept conditions that compromise their principles.
He further challenged the notion that missing out on a role is equivalent to harassment, asserting that talent and self-belief are the true paths to success. “I hate it when they say I won’t be given a role if he doesn’t sleep with me. Must you play that role?” Laniyan remarked.
