A devastating fire in Katsina metropolis in the early hours of Monday has left residents in deep shock after an entire household of five lost their lives. The victims — 35-year-old Muhammad Habibu, his wife Fatima, and their children Khadija, Abubakar, and Aliyu — were trapped as the blaze spread through their home while they slept.
According to residents, Habibu worked as a casual staff member with the Katsina State Water Board. Neighbours said they attempted to control the fire before responders arrived, but the intensity of the flames made rescue impossible. Community members also raised concerns about the late arrival of the fire service, saying quicker intervention might have reduced the scale of destruction.
Many locals pointed to persistent irregularities in power supply as a long-standing hazard in the area. Although officials have yet to confirm the exact cause of the incident, some residents believe a sudden voltage surge may have sparked the inferno. The tragedy has renewed calls for improved emergency response systems, stronger public sensitisation on fire safety, and urgent government action to prevent similar disasters.
Speaking to Trust TV, the elder brother of the deceased described the painful moment he learned what had happened. He said he sensed something unusual around 3 a.m., but only understood the tragedy when he received a call an hour later informing him that his brother and his entire family had died in the fire.
