I Sold My Baby For ₦600,000 To Start A Business – Suspect
According to Vanguard, a 26-year-old woman, Rachael, has revealed that she sold her two-week-old baby for ₦600,000 due to her inability to care for the child.
However, the baby was later sold to a 42-year-old woman for ₦4 million, while Rachael received only ₦600,000 from the transaction.
Rachael, a resident of Asaba, Delta State, was paraded by the State Police Command alongside two accomplices.
Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident. Rachael explained that she already had another son and found it difficult to provide for both children.
The father of the baby denied paternity, leaving Rachael to shoulder the responsibility of caring for the infant.
The baby was born on January 27, 2025.
“I gave the baby away because I am the only one taking care of the child,” Rachael said.
She also shared that during her pregnancy, she struggled to support herself financially.
“I took care of myself; I was going to people’s compounds to clean and do some other chores,” she recalled.
Rachael was introduced to a woman who offered to help her. Unable to afford the care of two children, she agreed to give away her baby.
The woman gave her ₦600,000, and Rachael paid her ₦30,000 in return.
The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, admitted that she sold the child for ₦3.5 million and provided Rachael with ₦600,000.
She further revealed that Rachael told her the money would be used to start a business.
The 42-year-old woman who sought to adopt the baby confirmed paying ₦4 million for the child.
She mentioned that she had informed a woman in her area about her intention to legally adopt a child and was reassured that the adoption documents were being processed.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the illegal nature of the child sale. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter to ensure that all involved parties face the appropriate legal consequences.
This incident highlights the financial struggles faced by some individuals, but the illegal sale of children remains a serious crime.
