Former Prince George’s County judge in Maryland, April Ademiluyi, has spoken candidly about a traumatic experience that shaped her decision to pursue a judicial career. In an interview with The Punch, Ademiluyi described the incident that exposed her to systemic injustices within the legal system.
She explained that her entry into public service was not planned but motivated by a personal encounter with crime and the challenges of seeking justice. “After falling victim to a crime and reporting it, I discovered that those responsible were affluent, influential, and had close ties to the prosecutors. I realized there was a two-tiered justice system—one for the wealthy and another for the rest of us,” she said.
Ademiluyi revealed that the event occurred during a 2012 bar association conference, where she was drugged and raped. “It was a sad experience in 2012. It was a conference where lawyers gathered. So, obviously, those who drugged and raped me were lawyers. Then I reported the case to the local police,” she recounted.
She further described how initial police investigations helped her capture a phone recording in which one of the perpetrators admitted to wrongdoing. However, she later discovered that the recording had been replaced with a poor-quality version, containing no admission of guilt and appearing manipulated. This experience, she said, reinforced her determination to pursue reform from within the judicial system.
