Nigerian media entrepreneur and TV host Chude Jideonwo reflects on how much his understanding of marriage and personal readiness has changed over the years, especially when he thinks back to his early adulthood.
In a recent conversation, he opened up about a period in his life when marriage felt like an urgent goal rather than a carefully considered decision. At the time, he admits he was influenced heavily by emotion and personal struggles rather than clarity or stability.
He explained that in his twenties, he often believed that getting married would help fill an emotional gap he was dealing with internally. However, with time and experience, he has come to see that mindset differently and with more perspective.
He shared his thoughts plainly:
“I was very desperate to get married in my 20s because I was very lonely, but I now realise I was not ready and marriage would not have solved it.”
Looking back, he now understands that emotional loneliness cannot be resolved by entering a relationship or marriage. Instead, he believes those feelings require personal growth, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of one’s own identity before involving another person in such a significant commitment.
He also noted that his twenties were a period of exploration, where he was still learning about himself, his values, and how to manage his emotional world. According to him, that phase was necessary, even if it came with confusion and impulsive thinking about major life decisions.
For him, marriage is not just about desire or timing alone, but about emotional maturity and being secure enough within oneself to build a stable partnership. He expressed that without that foundation, relationships risk becoming solutions to problems they were never meant to fix.
He further explained that what once felt like urgency has now turned into understanding. The pressure he once felt has been replaced with a more thoughtful approach to life decisions, especially those that involve long-term commitment.
His reflections offer a personal look into growth and timing, showing how perspectives can shift significantly with age, experience, and deeper self-awareness.
