If I’m going to my constituency, will I go without security? I think the government should clarify this -Ihonvbere

Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, has called for clarification on the recent presidential order to withdraw police escorts from Very Important Persons (VIPs). Speaking to PUNCH on Friday, November 28, 2025, Ihonvbere raised concerns about the scope of the policy and its implications for public officials traveling to high-risk areas.

Although he does not consider himself a VIP, Ihonvbere stressed that his role as a national officer requires adequate security. He highlighted the potential dangers of traveling through volatile regions, citing his route from Benin City to his constituency in Edo State as an example of areas vulnerable to kidnappers.

“If I’m going to my constituency, will I go without security? I think the government should clarify this so that it will be clear for us to know who are affected by this development. I want to repeat that there are VIPs and public officers,” Ihonvbere said, emphasizing the need for public servants to remain protected to perform their duties effectively.

He urged the government to provide clear guidelines on the policy to ensure safety without compromising the responsibilities of elected officials.
