Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South and a former Senate Leader and Chief Whip, has spoken candidly about his current role in the Senate and shared insights on Nigeria’s security challenges.
In an interview with The Nigerian Tribune, Ndume drew on his experience as former chairman of the Senate Committee on Army to discuss the nation’s security situation. He offered his perspective on whether Nigeria can rely solely on domestic forces or requires external military support.
When asked if President Bola Tinubu was overwhelmed by the security crisis, Ndume disagreed, emphasizing that the challenge lies in the centralized approach to governance. He argued that while the ultimate responsibility rests with the Commander-in-Chief, effective governance should be collaborative—“of the people, for the people, and by the people”—rather than concentrated in one office.
Addressing the role of the National Assembly, Ndume clarified that criticisms of lawmakers should not be directed at him personally. He explained that, despite his past leadership positions, he currently holds no formal role: “I am nobody. I am not even a committee chairman. I don’t even have an office,” he said.
