Authorities are continuing investigations into the death of content creator Ashlee Jenae, who died during a trip to Zanzibar earlier this month.
Police in Zanzibar have seized the passport of her fiancé, Joe McCann, and are questioning him as part of the inquiry, although he is currently being treated as a witness and no arrests have been made.
Jenae had travelled to Zanzibar with McCann to celebrate her 31st birthday, during which he proposed. The trip, however, ended in tragedy. According to reports, the couple had been separated into different rooms by hotel staff on April 8 following a domestic dispute. McCann later told authorities that he found Jenae unresponsive the following day, and she was subsequently taken to hospital where she died on April 10.
In a statement, police said the incident is linked to the earlier dispute, with documents listing the immediate cause of death as cerebral hypoxia caused by strangulation and suffocation.
Jenae’s family has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death, alleging that McCann delayed informing them for several hours and initially downplayed the seriousness of the situation.
They also say they have not heard from him since he informed them she had been hospitalised, and are considering travelling to Tanzania to engage directly with authorities as investigations continue.
