Ini Edo Reacts To CAN’s Criticism Over Her Movie Title “A Very Dirty Christmas”

Nollywood actress Ini Edo has addressed concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of her new movie, “A Very Dirty Christmas”.

CAN had criticised the title, calling it offensive and disrespectful to Christianity, and questioned how the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) approved the film for release during the Christmas season.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Ini Edo defended the title, explaining that creative work is meant to challenge ideas, start conversations, and reflect real-life experiences.

She said the film followed all required regulations and received approval from both the NFVCB and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

“I am a devout Christian. My faith is deeply personal to me and guides my values, choices and life,” Edo said.

“I would never knowingly create or associate myself with any work that seeks to misrepresent, disrespect or undermine my religion or the essence of Christmas.”

According to her, the movie title is symbolic and represents the contrast often seen during the festive period, happiness alongside hardship, and moral ideals alongside human flaws.

She noted that storytelling often uses contrast to encourage reflection, not to offend or mock any belief.

Storytelling has always relied on contrast to encourage reflection, not to cause offence,” she said.

Edo also pointed out that the film was widely promoted before its release, with the title openly displayed, and no objections were raised at the time.

“It is therefore surprising that reservations are only being expressed after the film has been released and duly approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities,” she said, adding that earlier discussions could have helped avoid the current controversy.

While recognising CAN’s concerns, Ini Edo said she respects the importance of faith in Nigerian society and called for open dialogue and mutual respect between religion, culture, and creative expression.

She encouraged the public to watch the film and judge it based on its message, adding that she plans to visit cinemas across the country to meet fans.

Meanwhile, the NFVCB confirmed that it has begun talks with the film’s producers about possibly changing the movie’s title.

The board said the film went through its standard review process and that its approval does not mean it supports any disrespect toward Christianity or Christmas, but rather recognises the work as a piece of fictional creativity.

KanyiDaily recalls that Ini Edo had announced that she’s engaged and preparing for a fairytale wedding.
