Insecurity: Nigerians Are At Liberty To Seek International Help If Government Fails – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that Nigerians have the right to seek assistance from the international community if the government is unable to ensure their safety amid rising insecurity.

He made the remarks on Friday during the Plateau Unity Christmas and Praise Festival at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Jos South, Plateau State, expressing concern over the increasing violence across the country.

Obasanjo noted that many Nigerians live in fear due to persistent killings and attacks in various regions. He stressed that citizens rely on their leaders for protection, but current realities suggest that the government is struggling to meet this responsibility.

“Nigerians are being killed, and our government seems to be incapable of protecting us. We are part of the world community. If our government cannot do it, we have the right to call on the international community to do for us what our government cannot do for us,” Obasanjo said. He urged leaders at all levels to take their duties seriously and implement effective measures to end the violence.

The former president also highlighted the potential of modern technology, including satellites and drones, to track and apprehend criminals. He questioned why these tools are not being fully utilized and criticised the practice of negotiating with armed groups, warning that paying criminals only encourages further attacks.
