“It’s very unfortunate for a brigadier general to be captured that way-Christopher Musa

General Christopher Musa (rtd), Minister of Defence–designate and former Chief of Defence Staff, has described the recent capture of a Nigerian Brigadier General by insurgents as “very unfortunate,” highlighting gaps in Nigeria’s security architecture that need urgent attention. His remarks were reported by NTA during his ministerial screening at the National Assembly on Wednesday.

“It’s very unfortunate for a Brigadier General to be captured that way,” Musa said, stressing that the incident raises critical questions about operational discipline, situational awareness, and adherence to military protocols. Known for his firm stance on professionalism within the armed forces, Musa noted that senior officers must serve as examples of tactical prudence and strategic understanding. He emphasized that while troops continue to make sacrifices in combating terrorism and banditry, officers must follow safety procedures, intelligence guidelines, and rules of engagement to prevent vulnerabilities.

He added that incidents like this can undermine troop morale and embolden adversaries, viewing such captures as symbolic victories. The event, according to Musa, underscores the need for continuous retraining, improved coordination, and enhanced protection mechanisms for senior officers during high-risk deployments.

Musa further assured the Senate that, if confirmed as Minister of Defence, he would prioritize reforms to strengthen command structures, upgrade operational support systems, and ensure that officers at all levels receive updated training aligned with evolving security threats. He stressed the importance of intelligence-driven operations and modern warfare techniques, insisting that Nigeria’s armed forces must adapt quickly to changing conflict dynamics.
