Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo used his moment of honour at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) to speak out against xenophobia in South Africa, urging unity across the continent and stronger protection for Africans living abroad.

The award-winning actor received the Industry Merit Award on Saturday night, joining fellow honourees at the prestigious ceremony that celebrates excellence in African film and television.

During his acceptance speech, Kanayo dedicated the recognition to actors, filmmakers, and crew members across Africa, especially those who laid the foundation for the industry decades ago.

“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew. Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on,” he said, acknowledging the sacrifices made by early pioneers of Nollywood and African cinema.

The actor, who has built a career spanning several decades and is known for his intense roles in classic Nigerian films, reflected emotionally on survival in the entertainment industry.

“Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices,” he added, hinting at the challenges, struggles, and personal losses experienced over the years.

Kanayo also used the platform to appeal to international partners supporting African storytelling. He specifically called on Canal+ to continue investing in the growth of African entertainment.

“I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and funding for African creative industries.

However, the most striking moment of his speech came when he addressed the ongoing issue of xenophobic violence in South Africa. Without mincing words, the actor expressed disappointment over repeated attacks on foreigners, particularly Africans living within the country.

“On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa,” he said.

His remarks were met with applause from parts of the audience, as many in the industry have previously spoken about the need for continental unity and safer environments for creatives and migrant workers.

Kanayo’s statement added a political and emotional layer to an evening primarily focused on entertainment, fashion, and celebration of African cinema.

Also honoured at the event was veteran actress Sola Sobowale, who received her own Industry Merit Award. She thanked fans, colleagues, and filmmakers for their unwavering support throughout her career, describing her journey as one filled with gratitude and perseverance.

The 2026 AMVCA edition once again highlighted the growing influence of African storytelling on the global stage, while also serving as a platform for industry voices like Kanayo O. Kanayo to draw attention to broader social issues affecting the continent.
