Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sparked discussion with a tongue-in-cheek remark about IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s influence while in detention. Speaking on SYMFONI TV, Sowore highlighted how some high-profile detainees maintain authority and respect even behind bars.
During the interview, Sowore joked about Kanu’s symbolic leadership in custody: “As you know, he’s the president of that prison. So I won’t be surprised if he is the national president of all the prisons in the country.” His remark drew both laughter and reflection, illustrating the unusual authority some detainees can command.
Sowore clarified that his comment was meant to emphasize the influence political figures can wield even in restrictive environments, rather than to trivialize incarceration. He explained that individuals with strong followings or established movements often retain leadership roles among fellow inmates.
He also criticized the extended detention of political figures, arguing that prolonged and unnecessary imprisonment undermines public trust in Nigeria’s justice system. Sowore warned that such practices could exacerbate national tensions and deepen citizen mistrust in governance.
