A video circulating online suggests that negotiations took place between the Nigerian government and the bandits who abducted students from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, a claim that appears to contrast with official statements asserting no ransom or deal was involved.
According to Daily Post, the students were freed on Tuesday, with authorities maintaining that their release was achieved without any form of payment. However, footage shared on X by @AM_Saleeem shows armed members of the kidnapping group speaking about discussions with government representatives.
In the video, one of the bandits questioned the girls about military aircraft that flew over the forest during their captivity, asking how many jets had passed. The students replied, “uncountable.” Another bandit assured the students, “We will take you back home safe to your parents. We are doing this based on peace deals,” while also criticizing authorities, asking, “How many helicopters did you see hover around?”
Toward the end of the footage, a member of the group stated, “We are releasing you after negotiations. Your government cannot rescue you by force. Your government has failed.” The video surfaced shortly after Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, confirmed that all kidnapped students had regained their freedom.
The students, abducted during an attack that also claimed the life of the school vice-principal, were later seen smiling on a bus as officials prepared to convey them to Birnin Kebbi, the state capital. Authorities have confirmed that the girls will be reunited with their parents on Wednesday.
