The Kwara State Police Command has officially refuted viral reports claiming that a 16-year-old girl was unlawfully detained in place of her fleeing brother. The brother is allegedly a suspect in a generator theft case in the Arandun community, Irepodun Local Government Area.
The controversy gained traction after a video surfaced on social media. In the footage, the teenager’s mother is seen accusing the police of holding her daughter as a “proxy” arrest. The video also captured disgruntled community members at the police station, confronting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) over the minor’s detention. read here
Setting the record straight, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire, issued a statement detailing the incident. According to the police, a case of housebreaking and theft was reported at the Arandun Police Division on April 30, 2026, at approximately 4:00 PM.
The prime suspect, 19-year-old Timothy Aransiola—who was already on the division’s watchlist for prior incidents—reportedly absconded as soon as the investigation began. The police maintain that their actions align with standard procedures and deny using the suspect’s younger sister as a bargaining chip for his surrender.
‘’Subsequent intelligence revealed that the suspect was being harboured and assisted to evade by one Esther Aransiola, ‘F’, 16 years, a sister of the suspect. She was taken into custody on Friday 01/05/26 for aiding and abetting a suspect with the intent to obstruct lawful arrest.
She was duly cautioned, and her statement was taken, in line with established procedures, and released to her guardian on bond” the statement read
She said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, Timothy Aransiola, and bring him to justice. She added that the Kwara State Police Command urges members of the public to disregard the misleading content and “refrain from spreading unverified information capable of inciting unnecessary tension.”
