A woman identified as Rose from Bungoma has shared her harrowing experience while working abroad in Saudi Arabia, where she went to support her single mother and help raise her younger siblings. What was meant to be an opportunity to improve her family’s life turned into a situation that threatened her safety.
Rose explained that she was employed as a domestic worker, helping a family with daily chores and caring for a newborn. While she initially faced some tension with her employer’s wife, she tried to remain patient and respectful. However, she soon observed troubling behaviour in the household that left her fearful and uncomfortable.
On one occasion, Rose quickly assisted the wife during childbirth and ensured she reached the hospital safely, even when her husband initially refused help. This act eventually improved their relationship, and Rose earned her employer’s gratitude. Despite this, she felt increasingly unsafe due to unexplained tensions with other members of the household.
She also noticed behaviour in the home that went against her expectations and cultural norms, which heightened her concern. Fearing for her life and wellbeing, Rose made the difficult decision to leave the household discreetly and return home to Kenya under the cover of night.
Rose’s story highlights the risks faced by workers abroad and underscores the importance of safety, awareness, and support networks for those seeking employment in foreign countries.
