Sheikh Imran AbdulMajeed Eleha has addressed rising concerns about insecurity in northern Nigeria and the frequent misuse of Islamic expressions by violent groups. Speaking in an interview with The Punch, the Lagos Chief Imam stressed that those who attack innocent people while shouting “Allahu Akbar” are acting in clear opposition to Islamic teachings.
To explain his point, Sheikh Eleha cited a historical example from the time of Prophet Muhammad. He recalled how a man once falsely accused the Prophet of injustice, prompting Umar, one of the Prophet’s companions, to react angrily. The Prophet urged restraint, warning that future generations would emerge claiming to be Muslims while killing innocent individuals—people he described as the “Khawarij,” a group historically known for extremism and violence.
The Chief Imam emphasized that such extremists are not true followers of Islam but criminals who exploit religious language to deceive the public. He reaffirmed that Islam strictly forbids taking life without legal authority, adding that even in cases where punishment is warranted, only the state has the right to administer it—not individuals or armed groups.
Sheikh Eleha concluded that anyone who kills under the guise of Islam is acting in the manner of the historical Khawarij and must face the full force of the law. He said this is the only way to uphold justice and protect the larger society.
