Mother Narrates How Her 5-Year-Old Daughter Saved Her From Being Kidnapped In Niger State

A teacher in Niger State, Martha Mathias, has shared an emotional account of how her five-year-old daughter’s courage kept her from being kidnapped during the attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri. The incident, which left families devastated, saw hundreds of students and teachers abducted.

During a video report by AIT, the school premises were filled with grief as parents and relatives of the abducted 239 students and 12 teachers gathered in protest. Many broke down in tears, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty over the fate of their missing children, some of whom are as young as six.

Parents who lost multiple children to the raid described the situation as a nightmare, expressing deep worry about the conditions their children might be facing in captivity. The tension and sorrow in the community were palpable as families demanded swift action from authorities.

Amid the distress, Martha recounted how the attackers had already taken her husband and several others before her daughter suddenly woke up and confronted the armed men. Despite warnings and even a gun pointed at her, the child refused to leave her parents’ side. Her cries and bold resistance eventually forced one of the kidnappers to ask Martha to remain with the other children instead of being taken away.

Martha recalled her daughter saying she would not leave without her parents, a moment of courage that may have saved her mother’s life.
