Renowned Islamic scholar and former Chairman of the Oyo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Sheikh Taofeek Akeugbagold, has cautioned Nigerians against believing that shared religious identity alone can secure entry into foreign countries. The warning came during a recent interview addressing national issues such as migration, insecurity, and the responsibilities of religious leaders.
Speaking with journalists Lasisi Olagunju and Saheed Salawu on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Akeugbagold emphasized that countries, including Saudi Arabia, strictly enforce immigration laws regardless of faith. “As a Muslim, I cannot go to Saudi Arabia and say, ‘I am your brother in Islam, please let me enter.’ It cannot work,” he said, stressing that legal frameworks, not religious ties, govern international borders.
The scholar urged Nigerians to plan their travels carefully, secure proper documentation, and respect the laws of the countries they intend to visit. He particularly warned youths against attempting dangerous or illegal migration routes, noting that many face detention, exploitation, or worse when circumventing official processes.
Akeugbagold also called on the government to intensify public awareness campaigns about legal travel procedures. He advised religious leaders to avoid spreading misleading narratives that could put followers at risk abroad, reinforcing the importance of responsible guidance within communities.
