Mercy Wanjiru has shared the harrowing experience of being sexually exploited by her employer while working as a house help. Despite the trauma, she has rebuilt her life and now runs her own business.
Mercy explained that after her father passed away, her mother could not afford to send her to secondary school, so she began working as a house girl at age sixteen. Her first placement was with a family of pastors, where she had a positive experience, but it ended abruptly when the employer asked her to leave over minor issues.
She later joined another household, also led by a pastor. During this time, the wife often left for work for days, and her boss began making inappropriate advances, insisting that she could not leave the house without sleeping with him. One day, he attempted to lock her inside the house, but Mercy managed to escape and ran away safely.
When she tried to explain the situation to her employer’s wife, her boss preemptively accused her of being involved with a man in their house, leading to her being unfairly dismissed. Determined not to return to such work, Mercy saved her earnings and started her own hotel business, achieving independence and financial stability.
