Former Anambra State Governor and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has recounted a violent attack on his convoy that left a woman dead and one of his police orderlies injured. The armed assailants were reportedly disguised in police and military uniforms, raising concerns about the sophistication and motives behind the assault.
Ngige spoke on Friday at his residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, during a sympathy visit by 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. The former minister addressed circulating rumours about his death, assuring Nigerians that he was unharmed. “As you can see, I am very much alive. The rumours of my death should be dismissed,” he said.
He explained that the attack occurred around Umuoji when aides returning from errands were intercepted. “My aides noticed some vehicles speeding toward them, which suddenly reversed, pursued them, and opened fire,” Ngige recalled. His driver managed evasive maneuvers until the attackers caught up with a police orderly, shooting him in the leg, seizing his rifle, and taking his uniform.
The gunmen reportedly accused the officers of serving a “zoo government,” a phrase linked to separatist agitators in the region. Ngige warned that the group appeared organized and systematic in collecting weapons while impersonating security personnel. He stressed that if such actors are not traced and stopped, they could threaten the peace recently established in Anambra State, particularly during the Christmas season.
Ngige confirmed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had been briefed, and security agencies are investigating the attack. While it is unclear whether he was specifically targeted, the convoy’s prominence in the state makes that a possibility.
