The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has raised alarms over Nigeria’s growing security challenges, revealing that terrorist groups are increasingly using satellite-based communication systems to bypass traditional security measures.
Dr. Matthew Adepoju, NASRDA Director General, told Channels Television that terrorists have shifted from conventional mobile networks to satellites, making mobile shutdowns during security operations largely ineffective. He explained that many Nigerians overestimate the capabilities of current satellites, which are mainly designed for imaging and cannot provide real-time surveillance. These satellites typically take about three days to revisit the same location, limiting rapid response to fast-moving threats.
To tackle these gaps, NASRDA is developing a new satellite constellation, approved by President Bola Tinubu, that will reduce revisit times to four to six hours and eventually add four to five additional satellites for near real-time monitoring. Adepoju highlighted the importance of continuous satellite launches to maintain global coverage and replace older units as needed.
The agency has also partnered with a U.S.-based company operating nearly 300 satellites capable of advanced signal analytics to strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence capacity. However, the platform remains inactive due to funding challenges. NASRDA emphasized its commitment to research-driven security solutions and expanding satellite technology to close existing surveillance gaps.
Recently, the Federal Executive Council approved the launch of four new satellites—three Earth observation and one radar satellite—to enhance monitoring of criminal activity. Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, said the radar satellite will provide imaging capabilities day and night, in all weather conditions, aiding military operations in high-risk zones like the Sambisa Forest. Adepoju clarified that no satellites were lost, noting that a decommissioned unit experienced technical issues. NASRDA is also progressing with Nigeria’s first astronaut selection in collaboration with the Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA).
