Nigerian Man and South African Woman Sentenced to 37 Years for Drug Trafficking

A Nigerian man, Victor Ikechukwu Udoh, and his South African accomplice, Vuyisekha Miranda Mzwakhe, have been sentenced to a combined 37 years in prison for drug trafficking in South Africa. The sentencing was handed down by the Oudtshoorn Regional Court in the Western Cape, following an investigation by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Udoh received a 20-year prison term for drug trafficking and an additional two years for overstaying his visa by more than five years. Mzwakhe was sentenced to 15 years for her involvement in the offence. According to NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, the two had coordinated their operation over social media, with Mzwakhe offering to act as a drug mule for Udoh, transporting methamphetamine from Plettenberg Bay to Johannesburg or Durban.

Court proceedings revealed that Udoh financed Mzwakhe’s travel and accommodations, and the pair were apprehended at a police roadblock after a tip-off. Officers discovered 743 grams of methamphetamine (Tik) in a parcel with a street value of approximately R260,050. While both defendants initially denied wrongdoing, social media messages presented in court confirmed their collaboration.

Mzwakhe was released on bail but later rearrested for failing to appear in court, spending a year in custody. Udoh, 33, had opposed bail and spent five years in detention before sentencing. The court also noted that Udoh’s 2016 asylum application had been rejected.
