Nigerian footballer, Chuba Akpom will officially join Ipswich Town on a permanent basis from Ajax on July 1, 2026, following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

A mandatory clause, reportedly worth £7 million (approximately €8 million), was triggered in his loan deal after the “Tractor Boys” secured their return to the top flight. The 30-year-old forward will sign a three-year contract that is set to run until 2029.

During his 2025/26 loan at Portman Road, Akpom made 31 appearances across all competitions, primarily serving as an impact substitute. He contributed two goals during the campaign, including a crucial strike in a 3-0 win over Oxford United on New Year’s Day and a goal against Hull City.

Ipswich’s promotion was confirmed on Saturday, May 2, 2026, after a 3-0 victory over QPR, which saw them finish second in the Championship with 84 points.

Akpom chose to join Ipswich in August 2025, turning down a permanent offer from Birmingham City to push for his return to the Premier League.

Before his stint in England, the former Arsenal striker made 68 appearances for Ajax, scoring 23 goals. The permanent acquisition of Akpom is part of a broader recruitment strategy for Ipswich’s Premier League return, which also reportedly includes triggering a €2.5 million clause for defender Cedric Kipre from Reims.
