Nigerians are lobbying in Washington against Nigeria, and we had no ambassador to counter it– Hakeem

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s absence of an ambassador in Washington, linking it to growing challenges in safeguarding the country’s diplomatic interests in the United States.

In an interview with Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed explained that the lack of an official Nigerian envoy in Washington created a critical vacuum at a time when lobbying efforts in the U.S. were influencing narratives about Nigeria. “Nigerians are lobbying in Washington against Nigeria, and we had no ambassador to counter it,” he said, emphasizing the strategic importance of the diplomatic post.

He noted that this gap affected Nigeria’s ability to respond promptly and accurately to policymakers and lobbying groups, some of which were promoting positions unfavorable to the country. According to Baba-Ahmed, having an ambassador in place is essential for presenting official stances and ensuring that international perceptions align with national interests.

The former adviser added that the absence of leadership in key diplomatic missions limits the government’s capacity to manage security cooperation, governance concerns, and international policy discussions. He argued that delays in ambassadorial appointments over the past two years contributed to the country’s reduced influence in critical global discussions.

Baba-Ahmed stressed that timely and strategic diplomatic appointments are necessary to safeguard Nigeria’s interests abroad.
