Not long ago, a private citizen visited me, He came from the US. He had six police guards- Ihonvbere

A recent remark by House of Representatives Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere has reopened conversations about Nigeria’s security allocation. He expressed concern after a private visitor from the United States—who holds no public office—arrived at his home with six police officers serving as escorts.

In an interview with The Punch, Ihonvbere described the incident as a clear example of how police personnel are unevenly distributed nationwide. He noted that while certain individuals move around with heavy security, many ordinary Nigerians and vulnerable communities struggle to access adequate protection.

The lawmaker emphasised the need for an urgent review of deployment practices, insisting that security resources should serve the public interest rather than personal convenience. According to him, the current system exposes deeper structural issues within Nigeria’s policing framework.

He added that meaningful reforms anchored on fairness, efficiency, and accountability are necessary if the country hopes to strengthen safety for all.
