Officers Spent 25 Yrs Preparing; At Career Peak, They’re Replaced By Politicians And Demoralized–Keshi

Nigeria’s longtime diplomats are increasingly frustrated after spending decades training for ambassadorial roles, only to be replaced by political appointees at the height of their careers. Ambassador Joe Keshi raised the alarm during a recent television interview, warning that the situation is weakening morale within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Keshi explained that many officers had spent between 20 and 25 years rotating through international postings, building expertise and preparing to represent Nigeria. According to him, these professionals now feel sidelined and unappreciated as the government questions their patriotism while ignoring their qualifications.

He noted that several sets of career diplomats have already retired without ever receiving ambassadorial appointments, leaving many disillusioned after a lifetime of service. Keshi described the mood within the ministry as one of deep disappointment, with officers wondering why their years of training are now being overlooked.

Ambassador Keshi added that the continuous replacement of trained diplomats with political nominees has left many officers demoralized and doubtful about the future of Nigeria’s foreign representation.
