The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has spoken openly about his experience with polygamy, revealing that he still feels shy whenever he reflects on the number of wives he has today.

The respected monarch made the personal confession while speaking about how his opinions on marriage and family changed over time. According to him, there was a period in his younger years when he strongly criticised men who married several wives, often questioning how they managed such complicated family arrangements.

The traditional ruler admitted that back then, he never imagined that life would eventually place him in a similar position.

“I am always shy with the numerous wives I have because when I was younger, I used to abuse people with many wives and wonder how they cope, but see me doing same today,” the monarch said.

His statement came in a calm and reflective tone, giving insight into the personal side of a royal figure who is widely known for preserving Yoruba culture and traditions. Rather than speaking from the position of a king alone, the Ooni appeared to speak as someone acknowledging how life experiences can reshape a person’s views over time.

Polygamy has long been associated with many royal institutions across different parts of Africa, especially within traditional settings where customs and heritage remain deeply respected.

As the custodian of one of the most revered traditional stools in Nigeria, the Ooni of Ife occupies a position that carries cultural expectations extending beyond leadership alone.

Despite his status, the monarch’s recent remarks painted a picture of humility and self-awareness. His comments suggested that even individuals in highly respected positions sometimes find themselves living realities they once judged from a distance.

Over the years, the Ooni of Ife has remained a prominent voice on matters relating to African tradition, unity, culture and leadership. His personal life has also attracted public attention, especially regarding his marriages and royal household.

By speaking candidly about his journey, the monarch offered a rare glimpse into the emotional and personal side of royal life, admitting that his younger self would probably have struggled to understand the path he walks today.

His comments have continued to draw attention because of the honesty attached to them, particularly the admission that life can sometimes lead people into situations they once believed they would never embrace.
