Former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had initially backed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s proposed defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, opposition from key APC members in Osun State reportedly blocked the move.
Speaking during a radio interview in Osogbo, Oyinlola explained that there had been an understanding that the Osun PDP would support Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, provided Adeleke was allowed to join the APC in 2026. “President Bola Tinubu wanted Governor Ademola Adeleke to come to the APC, but the APC members in Osun State opposed it,” he said. He added that opposition figures who refuse to join the APC voluntarily could face political challenges.
Oyinlola also noted that defections by high-profile politicians, including a former PDP vice-presidential candidate, suggested behind-the-scenes pressure within the political landscape. He recalled a remark from an APC leader, stating, “once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven.”
Addressing speculation about Adeleke possibly joining the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Oyinlola said he would personally inform Osun residents if any political realignment became imminent. Drawing from his own experience with the APC, he stressed that his future decisions would depend entirely on the credibility of the political platform. He described joining APGA as a “one-chance” move, while seeing the Accord Party as a more viable alternative.
Oyinlola further emphasized that Osun residents would ultimately judge Adeleke by his performance, citing salary payments and ongoing infrastructure projects as key measures. He also provided an update on PDP reconciliation efforts, noting progress in four of six troubled states and ongoing consultations with senior figures, including Sule Lamido and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
